Cummins: buy a Chinese or American engine?
Is there a fundamental difference between American-made engines and Chinese ones? Is it possible to say that the American ones are real, but in China they make cheap and lower quality analogs? What models of Cummins engines are mass-produced in China? Here are the answers to these interesting questions!
In 40 years, China has changed a lot. Rapid development allowed China to become the world's second largest economy in terms of nominal GDP in 2016. There were created favorable conditions for the location of production. “Jobs at any cost” has become the norm in Chinese life. A massive labor force, absence of problems with raw materials and loyalty of the authorities to environmental issues are the main components of the Chinese economic miracle.
Where are Cummins engines manufactured in China? American Cummins is no exception to global practice, and today China has 5 joint ventures that produce different series of Cummins engines: Chongqing Cummins Engine Company (CCEC), Dongfeng Cummins Engine Company (DCEC), Xi'an Cummins Engine Company (XCEC), Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Company (BFCEC) and Guangxi Cummins Industrial Power Company (GCIC). What series of Cummins engines are produced in China? Cummins N, M and K series diesel engines are manufactured by CCEC (Chongqing Cummins Engineering Company Limited). This Cummins co-manufacturing facility was established in 1995. The Cummins B, C, L, Z13, ISDe and ISLe series engines are manufactured by the US-China joint venture DCEC (Dongfeng Cummins Engineering Company Limited). The plant began operations in 1996.
Engines of the ISM / QSM series for construction equipment and multi-tonnage tractors have been produced by XCEC (Xi'an Cummins Engine Company Limited) since 2010. Diesel engines with full electronic control of the ISF, QSF and ISG series, complying with environmental standards of Euro 4, Euro 5, are produced by Beijing BFCEC (Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Company Limited) - a joint venture founded by Cummins in 2007. Engines of the QSB, L / QSL series for construction equipment have been produced since 2012 by a joint venture between Cummins and Chinese Liuzhou - GCIC (Guangxi Cummins Industrial Power Company Limited).
Is the quality of Chinese-made Cummins engines different from American ones? Although Cummins factories are located in China, not all engine components and assemblies are manufactured in this country. Up to 20% of them are imported to China from other countries, and of 80% of engine components, a significant part is made by OEM (from English - original equipment manufacturer), original (genuine) manufacturers.
The simplest example is your iPhone is assembled in China, but you don't think about it because it is assembled under Apple's quality control system. So is Cummins. If you buy a genuine Cummins product in China, you can rest assured that Cummins China and Cummins USA are the same product line in terms of reliability and quality.
The situation is such that even Cummins itself today imports many engines and components from China. But, the Chinese market is much more complicated than it might seem. There are many players on it who offer non-original parts ranging from high-quality imitations to downright low-grade fakes. In pursuit of a low price, you can, as they say, run into and decide that all goods in China are of poor quality. And that would be the wrong decision because you didn't buy a genuine Cummins.
How to distinguish genuine Cummins products from China from counterfeits?
Genuine components manufactured in the Cummins engine factories are always marked with the manufacturer's logo, have a manufacturer serial number, part number and are covered by the Cummins warranty.
OEM Components or OEM Engine Parts in China are manufactured and marketed by Cummins Authorized Accessory Enterprises. Genuine parts may not have the Cummins logo and may be sold in original packaging.
Aftermarket Parts / Copy Parts - aftermarket parts, non-original. They are sold by private Chinese companies with their own trademarks. These products are not warranted by Cummins and, by definition, such parts may be used beyond the engine warranty period.
Removed Parts - Parts removed from original Cummins engines. Such parts are removed from old, failed engines. There are also companies in China that disassemble and recover all components that can be remanufactured and sold. It is understood that such products are not covered by the Cummins warranty.
